Joel B. Trisel is an accomplished private voice, piano, and low brass instructor, with a proven record of success with singers and players of all ages and abilities.

Joel served as Choir Director (7-12) for Celina City Schools from 2015 to 2024. After doing as much good as he could, for as many students he could, for as long as he could, Joel decided to step out of public education for the first time since entering as a student in kindergarten (fall, 1994). Why? To provide the best private music lessons online and in person that can be found, and to adult learners!

Joel has degrees in Choral and Instrumental Education and a Masters Degree in Voice Performance from Bowling Green State University (2011, 2015). He elected to write a thesis as part of his graduate studies (available here), about small-scale opera, which proved to be an interesting topic of discourse when COVID struck five years later. Joel previously taught 7-12 band, choir, and general music at Preble Shawnee Local Schools from 2011-2013.

 

Joel served as bass section leader for Toledo Opera productions of Tosca, Aida, Faust, and Susannah (Floyd). He also served as a voice graduate teaching assistant and student director of MicrOpera productions, two of which he co-produced with his dear friend, Dr. Andrew Selle. Roles include: Marquis de la Force, Dialogues of the Carmelites; Major Gen. Stanley, Pirates of Penzance; Frank, Die Fledermaus; Rodrick Usher, Fall of the House of Usher; Papageno, Magic Flute; Dulcamara, L’Elisir d’amore; including performances of choral masterworks such as: Mahler’s Symphony 2, Beethoven’s 9th, Carmina Burana, Elijah, Chichester Psalms, Balthazaar’s Feast, Haydn’s Creation. Additionally, he led, prepared and conducted nine annual performances of Handel’s Messiah with the Celina High School choral department and community singers and alumni.

 

Joel has performed with several world-class artists; former colleagues have gone on to find success on Broadway, Broadway Touring shows, regional opera houses, Carnegie Hall, the Metropolitan Opera, NYC Opera, and across the country, working in arts advocacy, or teaching at any number of prestigious music institutions.

 

For Joel, all roads lead to the highest reward: teaching and encouraging learners in a way that empowers them to grow organically and with joy, not through cheap gimmicks and fancy AI modeled apps.

 

The breadth of his experiences has created a completely unique approach to music pedagogy, drawing on best practices from across all instrument groups, vocal styles, and ability levels.

Joel and his wife, Emily, reside in west-central Ohio, with their 5 dogs: Lady, Loki, Winston, Harper, and Tilly. Joel and Emily also enjoy freshwater aquariums and gardening. Joel and Emily also enjoy cooking and international cuisine, as well as travel and attending live events of all kinds.
